BBOS

“We still don’t know for sure, but I am absolutely determined — and I’ve spent a great deal of time and energy on this in the four months I’ve been CIA director — to get to the bottom of the question of what and who caused this.”

—William Burns, Central Intelligence Agency Director, 22 July 2021 on the Havana Syndrome

A number of years ago, scientists said, ‘Well, what if there is another way? What if we could develop a technology and create a new communication channel out of our heads?’” Justin Sanchez said. “It’s not a dream. It’s not science fiction. It is possible to create a direct interface to the brain.”

Buckle & Bernard Agency Developers is researching and developing a Brain-Based Operating System (BBOS) that would be a major component to fully functioning JAD2C and JWICS systems. BBOSs are an important emerging technology and would be a unifying structure for integrating disparate systems, weapons, personnel and nodes from each service of the military and intelligence community. There are also commercial uses of this technology that are currently being explored by organizations such as Neuralink, Synchron and Battelle.

BBOSs are a “leap-ahead technology investment (and) are intended to incentivize and foster innovative solutions to provide the DoD with significant technology advantage into the future.”

This is a high consequence mission. Getting this right is imperative. The ramification of failure is huge. These technologies are more dangerous and will have a bigger impact on society than nuclear weapons. As with all technologies they can be used for good and bad. Buckle & Bernard seeks to use the following described technologies for good.

The BBOS is a system of sensors that provides data to neuro-enabled agents, officers, sailors, soldiers and guardians. As a brain-based system, the BBOS uses software that is fed into the brain of the agent/warfighter, in real time. The agent can obtain situational-centric information to shorten and change the OODA loop. There are many areas that a BBOS can be used in, such as communication, controlling drones and swarms, targeting, ISR, and most interesting, reading thoughts. In one application, a heads-up Brain-Based Graphical User Interface (2BGUI) is created within the field of vision and is controlled by the user. There are many applications and uses for BBOSs and 2BGUIs.

One of the Navy’s identified scientific areas of interest is “Warfighter Performance.” The BBOS is posed to drastically increase performance of the warfighter and provide decision makers with a tool to make decisions in (close to) real-time. The brain would act as any other node on the systems. Weapons, devices, drones and other node components could be communicated with, and controlled by, direct brain action. Operators could communicate with each other through thoughts. The 2BGUI would give the operator further control and communication options displaying the 2BGUI in the operator’s field of vision. Interaction with the 2BGUI would be with eye movements, thoughts and interaction with the 2BGUI via cursors and hand movements.

The underlying directed energy technologies for doing this is through the EM spectrum and ultrasound, although there are other techniques for passing information from, and to, the brain. Quantum computing and communication is another technology that is viable to pass information within the nodes of the BBOS.

It is a game changing technology and system and the military that fields it first will have a huge advantage. There are organizations working on different solutions such as Neuralink, Synchron and Battelle. Darpa’s N3 program is researching BBOS. This technology can be used in an ISR mode and can literally read the thoughts and intents of targets. This technology is maturing in classified settings and is being fielded in use-case testing.

Looking towards the future, this proposed solution addresses, visualizes and conceptualizes a world of omnipresent sensor networks with a BBOS as the underlying system to develop and implement other high technologies. It specifically addresses concepts and approaches for the framework, technologies, infrastructure, and capabilities required to effectively conduct military operations in a world where omnipresent sensors track people, organizations, vehicles, and systems throughout their lives, at home and around the world in both the physical and virtual realms.

The following linked article discusses the technologies and situation.
